A common question with kratom users is whether kratom will show up on a drug test or not.
The short answer is: No, a regular drug screening will not include kratom. Kratom does not show up as another drug on your drug test either.
There are 10-panel tests that can test for kratom. It’s also possible for the drug screeners to directly test for the kratom alkaloids if they want to. A test that has kratom on it will most commonly be a urine test.
In most cases, you won’t be tested directly for kratom, and a regular drug screen won’t test for it.
When is kratom tested in drug screenings?
If you are taking a drug test for employment or some type of contract agreement, the chances of being tested for kratom are exceedingly low. Most drug tests will contain primary drugs of abuse, and kratom is not one of them.
Should you be attending a drug abuse clinic or otherwise some type of drug abuse center, your chances of a getting a kratom test are higher. If your drug screener says they will be testing for a wide variety of drugs, kratom could be on the list.
There are specific tests that test for kratom. These tests will usually test a urine sample. The urine test will test for the presence of the kratom alkaloids in your urine. The alkaloids in kratom that would show positive for kratom are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These are the active alkaloids in kratom that give the effects that kratom provides.
A blood test for drugs would make it easier to detect kratom, if the drug screener is testing for kratom.
When in doubt, it’s a good idea to rid your system of kratom entirely before a test. You never know if your drug screening will include kratom or not.
What drug tests contain kratom?
Specific testing for kratom comes sometimes on 10 panel drug tests.
A 10 panel drug test is one that screens for a multitude of tests. These types of tests may test for kratom. Here is what a 10 panel kratom drug test looks like:
These 10 panel drug tests are easily available online.
If you want to know if you will show up on a drug test that specifically screens for kratom, then buy a few of these and take the test.
If you are negative on this test, then you can be confident you will test negative on the official kratom drug test, assuming you stop your usage.
If you repeatedly test positive on a 10 panel drug test for kratom, then you will need to stop using kratom for a longer period of time to let it completely leave your system.
When is kratom out of your system?
If you do expect to get a kratom drug test, it’s important to know how long ahead of time you need to stop dosing in order to test negative. This is a difficult period to measure, because it’s different for each person’s body.
The factors that determine how quickly kratom leaves your system include the following:
- Age
- Bodyfat %
- Metabolism
Because of this, there is no single answer to how long it will take to fully process kratom out of your system.
As a general rule, kratom will generally be out of your system by 1-2 weeks. To be on the safer side, we recommend giving yourself closer to two weeks of no kratom in order to not test positive on a kratom test.
If your kratom consumption is higher than average, such as daily and multiple times a day, then you need more time. The more frequently you take high doses of kratom, the more you will time you will need to take before you will test negative on a kratom drug test.
So, if you are a heavy kratom user, we recommend giving yourself at least 2-3 weeks of no kratom usage in order to not test positive for it on a test.
Tests other than urine tests may be able to detect kratom longer than a urine test. For example, a blood test may be able to detect kratom for longer than a urine test. For these reasons, be careful about your usage when it comes time to take a test that may test for kratom.
For more information on kratom safety, we recommend using the SAMHSA website, which contains information on kratom: https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline
Is Kratom illegal?
Kratom is not illegal at the federal level in the United States. It is illegal in certain states of the US.
Kratom is illegal to buy, sell, and consume in the following states:
- Vermont
- Arkansas
- Alabama
- Wisconsin
- Indiana
- Rhode Island
If you live in these states, then you should be more careful about your kratom usage. Law enforcement may have tests on-hand to test drug users for the presence of kratom in their system.
Secondly, don’t have kratom on your person or attempt to buy kratom in any of these states, or else you risk trouble.
If you are outside of these states, then you don’t have anything to worry about when it comes to the legality of kratom. Thus, you don’t need to worry about getting in trouble for testing positive for kratom unless your test is for employment.
If you know ahead of time that you are taking a 10-panel multi-drug test, this may contain kratom, especially if you live or work in a state where kratom is illegal.
Kratom Drug Test – Conclusion
In conclusion, kratom is rarely tested for in drug screenings. It’s still important to be careful, and if you think you may be tested, cease use of kratom immediately.
There are some specific times when you may get a test that screens for kratom.
